Mount Lassen is a towering testament to the volcanic origins of this region, and an imposing sight from the trailhead on the shores of Lake Helen. In truth, however, hiking the Lassen Peak Trail, which switchbacks its way gradually up the mountain, is only a moderate workout, making the summit achievable for most reasonably fit hikers willing to put in a steady effort.

Bagging this peak is best done on a clear day to appreciate the views below and out toward the horizon, as wildlife on the trail becomes sparse once you've hiked above the last of the treetops. The landscape shifts noticeably here, giving way to exposed volcanic rock and scattered patches of hardy alpine vegetation clinging to the thin mountain soil. As the route continues, the only remaining wildlife you're likely to see from here to the summit will be the occasional chipmunk scurrying across your path, seemingly undeterred by the thinning air and rocky terrain. Views from the peak are nothing short of spectacular on a clear day, stretching as far as the massive, snowcapped Mount Shasta, over seventy miles away, along with sweeping vistas of the surrounding volcanic plateau.

Being one of the busiest hikes in the park, it's worth tackling Lassen Peak early in the day, both to avoid the crowds and to steer clear of climbing during the warmest part of the day, when the exposed upper slopes offer little shade or relief from the sun. An early start also improves your odds of catching clear skies before afternoon clouds or haze have a chance to roll in and obscure the views.

Snow covers the Lassen landscape for much of the year, and some roads and trails may not be open, even in summer, depending on snowpack levels and ongoing maintenance work. Because conditions at this elevation can shift quickly and unpredictably, it's worth checking the links below for updated information on road closures, trail closures, and campground status before setting out.
