The image shows a tall, wooden fire lookout tower with a small cabin at the top, situated among trees with autumn-colored leaves under a clear blue sky.
Some fire towers are safe to climb, and some also have an accessible cabin for the best views. It's even possible to spend the night in a few of them - no reservation required. We've located all fire towers known to be still standing in New England, and have mapped and categorized them in our free, downloadable Map Pack.

To locate all the region’s fire towers, we've used our own on-the-ground data supplemented by desktop reviews of aerial imagery. For all towers we have yet to visit, we cannot guarantee location accuracy or public accessibility. Please respect locked gates and posted signs, and do not climb any fire tower that may be unsafe. Oh, and we didn't forget Rhode Island - we just couldn't find any hikeable fire towers in the state.

Connecticut Fire Towers

We list below the three fire towers in Connecticut that look hike-worthy to us, but we're yet to explore. Follow Trailspotting to stay updated when we publish trail reviews.

Connecticut fire towers yet to review:
Mowhawk Mt ·  Ratlum Mt ·  Tom Mt

Massachusetts Fire Towers

There are around fifty standing fire towers in Massachusetts, but many of them are positioned at the side of a road or located in other unremarkable places. After carefully identifying the all the towers, we've located those that are likely to be of interest to trail users and we're now actively exploring them. We hope to have a separate Massachusetts Fire Tower Map Pack soon, which will include not just the position of the towers, but additionally trail route maps and reviews for each.

You can see latest MA trail reviews or pick from the list of reviews here. We also list the remaining hike-worthy fire towers that we're yet to review.

Maine

We estimate there are around sixty extant fire towers in the state of Maine, but with the size of the state, the remoteness of the fire towers and the author's limited lifespan we doubt we'll ever explore all of these. The fire towers that we've visited in Maine so far are listed below, and available in this link for the latest ME trail reviews. The remaining towers are shown on our map, and linked under the 'yet to review' heading.
