A cascading waterfall tumbles down a rugged, rocky slope, framed by dense green foliage. The water flows into a shallow pool surrounded by moss-covered stones. A person sits quietly on a nearby rock, gazing at the rushing water, immersed in the tranquility of the forest setting.

The trail to the less-well known Mountain Brook Waterfall begins quietly, without fanfare or formal markers, from the roadside parking along Elbow Pond Road where two to three parking spots accommodate visitors seeking this tucked-away destination. In fact, this trail wasn't even shown on Open Street Maps, so we added it.

We follow the Mountain Brook Trail as it winds through the eastern foothills of Ragged Mountain, leading toward the concealed waterfall that serves as the hike's destination. The path maintains a moderately easy grade throughout most of the journey, making it accessible to hikers of varying experience levels.

Recent rainfall transforms this hike into its most rewarding form, as the waterfall reaches peak flow after wet weather events. However, these same conditions create muddy trail surfaces and standing water that can complicate what is otherwise a straightforward walk. Proper footwear becomes essential to navigate these obstacles safely and comfortably.

As we approach the falls, an unmarked junction appears along the trail. Here, we take the less-traveled left fork that descends toward the waterfall. This choice leads us closer to our destination, though the final approach to the best waterfall viewing positions may require navigating a moderately steep bank or maneuvering around fallen trees that occasionally block the path.

The reward for this modest effort reveals itself in the form of Mountain Brook's cascade, where water tumbles over granite ledges in a display that varies dramatically with seasonal conditions and recent precipitation. The surrounding forest provides a natural amphitheater for this water feature, creating a peaceful conclusion to the woodland approach.

A forest trail winds alongside a gently flowing stream, with sunlight filtering through dense foliage. The water moves over small rocks, creating a rhythmic pattern of ripples. A person walks along the path, their posture relaxed as they take in the tranquil surroundings.
The trail closely follows a fast-moving springtime Mountain Brook.

A person stands beside a sturdy tree in a dense forest, watching a stream flow over scattered rocks. The trees tower overhead, their branches forming a lush green canopy that filters soft sunlight. The water moves steadily, reflecting the surrounding foliage and adding to the serene, natural atmosphere. The individual appears contemplative, immersed in the tranquil setting.
