The Waihee Ridge Trail climbs the western slopes of Pu'u Kukui on Maui's windward side, offering views over rainforest valleys and the coastline below.

The trail starts with a paved section that climbs steadily before switching to a dirt path that winds through native forest and along open sections of ridge. The surrounding vegetation stays lush and green, with waterfalls visible in the valleys on either side of the trail.

Along the way, gaps in the trees open up views toward the northern and central parts of the island, and on a clear day you can see across the channel to Molokai.

The path can get muddy in spots, so shoes with good traction help, especially on the steeper sections. Keep an eye out for native plants along the route, and listen for native birds in the forested stretches.

Cloud cover tends to build around the ridge as the day goes on, so those hoping for the clearest views should plan around that.

To find the trailhead, take Highway 340 and watch for a signposted left turn onto a narrow single-lane road. Follow this road up a short distance to reach the parking area, which is small and can fill up.
