A scenic view looking out over rolling, tree-covered hills under a partly cloudy blue sky. In the foreground, a rocky outcrop forms a natural ledge on the right, balanced by a slender, twisting tree on the left framing the view. Beneath the tree-lined canopy, dense green forests extend across a series of low mountain ridges toward a broad, hazy valley stretching into the distant horizon.

Long Mountain sits inside Mount Holyoke Range State Park, along the boundary between Amherst and Granby, Massachusetts. Reaching an elevation of 920 feet, it serves as the easternmost summit in the Holyoke Range. It offers a quieter alternative to heavier-trafficked destinations in the park, such as Mount Norwottuck or the Seven Sisters ridge to the west.

The trailhead begins at a small pull-off on Harris Mountain Road, right where the road crosses the Amherst-Granby town line. From the parking area, the route to Long Mountain follows a section of the white-blazed 235-mile New England Trail. This section of path is also shared with the orange-blazed Robert Frost Trail and the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail.

The hike features a quick, fun climb through a mixed forest of oak, hickory, and maple. While overall trail conditions are moderate, hikers will encounter a few steep sections with occasional loose rock underfoot. This is particularly true where the path crosses exposed traprock. Traprock is a dark basaltic rock found throughout the Holyoke Range that naturally fractures into stair-like ledges. Built-in wooden steps help hikers navigate the steepest stretches of the trail.

The path continues to the summit of Long Mountain and leads to an overlook offering views of the surrounding landscape. From this lookout, the ridgeline rolls gently to the west, with the expanse of the Pioneer Valley spreading out below.

A split image featuring a wooded trail scene: on the left, a wooden signpost mounted with a white 'Robert Frost Trail' sign and a hunting season notice stands along a dirt path in a shadowy forest; on the right, a set of wooden staircase steps leads upward through a sunlit, rocky, and forested hill.
Long Mountain is part of the 47-mile Robert Frost Trail.

A hiker in a bright red shirt and dark pants walks away from the camera along a dirt trail winding through a dense, lush green forest. Sunlight filters through the canopy, illuminating the surrounding trees, ferns, and undergrowth that frame the narrow path.
Mostly easy trail, but with occasional steep sections.
