.   52WAV    A person sits on a rocky outcrop beside a black dog, gazing out over an expansive, lush forest stretching toward distant mountains beneath a partly cloudy sky. The composition emphasizes the vastness of nature and the quiet companionship between the person and the dog. The rocky foreground provides texture and contrast against the greenery, while the atmospheric haze over the mountains adds depth to the scene.

The Chippewa Trail rises from the shadows of roadside trees, revealing itself as more than just another forest path in western New Hampshire. We begin our ascent through dense woodland, where the steady incline matches what one would expect of a 1,500-foot climb. The gradient remains consistent, allowing for a sustainable pace as we work our way upward through mixed hardwood and conifer forest.

For the initial two-thirds of the route, the trail maintains its steady character for the initial two-thirds of the route, where we focus on the path ahead and the surrounding forest. As we progress, the westerly views begin to unfold behind us. Turning around during this section reveals distant landscapes that gradually expand, rewarding those who pause to look back. These westerly perspectives grow more pronounced as elevation increases.

The final third of the trail introduces moderately steep sections that require greater attention. These areas can prove more challenging during descent, particularly when conditions are damp, as wet rock and root surfaces become slippery.

The summit offers wonderful views from its many ledges, providing near 360-degree panoramas. Among the 4,000-foot peaks visible from this vantage point is Mt Moosilauke. The transition from the enclosed forest to the open, exposed heights creates a striking contrast.

A panoramic view of a mountainous landscape covered in dense green forest stretches across the image. Three birds glide through the sky, adding movement and a sense of scale. On the right, a tree branch with vibrant green needles enters the frame, providing a natural foreground element that contrasts with the vast expanse beyond.

An alternative approach to the summit, the Black Mountain Trail, ascends from the north. This equally popular route is one we have yet to explore. However, we've included it on our map, based on the latest Open Street Map version of the trail, along with links for those interested in experiencing it.

Black Mountain is part of the New Hampshire 52 With A View hiking list, which highlights peaks offering some of the state's most scenic vistas. A link at the bottom of this article provides access to Trailspotting’s map of all peaks on the list, along with detailed routes to reach them. Follow us as we continue exploring each peak, publishing trail reviews with descriptions, photography, and downloadable maps.

A forested scene showcases dense greenery with trees and foliage covering the landscape. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. The natural elements create a layered effect, with variations in plant life adding depth and texture.
