 Castle Rock Short Loop
Great family experience
The short Castle Rock Loop trail is a great option for families looking to play among the rocks, which are located a short distance from the southern parking lot. We categorize the clockwise route to Castle Rock as easy, but note that continuing on to close the loop and return to the parking lot requires a brief moderately steep section that those less confident on their feet might want to avoid by returning the way they came.

The image captures a natural rock formation characterized by its textured surface with holes and cavities, hinting at geological processes that shaped it over time. Adjacent to the rock, a tree with twisted branches, moss-covered bark, and sparse leaves adds a layer of rugged beauty and life to the scene. The background is a clear blue sky, providing a crisp and vibrant contrast to the earthy tones of the rock and tree.

Saratoga Gap Loop
Varied hiking with distant views
Hikers will appreciate combining the Saratoga Gap and Ridge Trails into a loop that descends along a creek into a valley that leads to Castle Rock Falls. The trail continues along a hillside route with many opportunities for distant views.

This moderate trail has some occasional mild rocky terrain to negotiate and a brief narrow cliffside section that utilizes a cable handrail to keep hikers safe along the route. The gentle uphill return to the trailhead along the Ridge Trail is a pleasant, verdant experience that also features a visit to Goat Rock, a popular climbing site with a large rock face.

Castle Rock Falls
Short trip to waterfall viewpoint
This short woodland trail is just over half a mile in length, leading hikers downward to a creek and onward to a viewing platform at the waterfall. The impressively tall Castle Rock Falls makes a great destination for a short hike, though we admit to being disappointed that the site doesn't offer a great vantage point from which to view the waterfall.

The image features a natural rock formation with two openings resembling cave entrances. The rock surface is weathered and displays diverse textures, including smooth areas and rough patches. Some sections are adorned with lichen or moss, adding a subtle touch of greenery to the otherwise earthy tones. The darker interiors of the openings suggest the presence of a small cave or hollow space within the rock. This geological feature emphasizes the effects of natural erosion and weathering, showcasing the complexity and beauty of the landscape.

Castle Rock State Park is a great all-year-round destination with an abundance of shade that is particularly welcome in the summer months. Visitors should note that snakes are occasionally spotted in the park, particularly among the rocks popular with families, so it is important to exercise appropriate caution.

Of the two paid parking lots off Skyline Boulevard, the northern lot is the largest and most well-equipped, featuring a manned visitors booth, flushing toilets and electric vehicle chargers. The southern lot is closest to Castle Rock, but is also more rustic with a dirt road and vault toilets. A short quarter-mile connecting trail between the two parking areas is shown on our map. We also note that people park in free roadside spots outside the entrance to the southern parking lot; however its crucial to be mindful of posted signs to avoid tickets and towing.

The image shows a dense forested area filled with twisted trees, large moss-covered boulders, and filtered sunlight creating a serene, natural ambiance. At the center, a person wearing a red shirt and dark pants climbs on one of the boulders, adding a human element to the rugged landscape. The interplay of shadows and light highlights the textures of the rocks, the vibrant green moss, and the intricate branches of the trees, evoking a sense of adventure and exploration.
