Wunderlich County Park Loop CA

• 3-star hike
• 5.2 mile loop
• Medium difficulty | Gain 1,240 feet
• Woodside, CA | San Francisco Bay Area
• Driving Directions: Trailhead

The shaded trails that criss-cross Wunderlich County Park pass from mixed woodland to chaparral scrub, and from grassy meadow to second-growth redwood groves. Our route takes in all these sights and more, making for a pleasant if not spectacular five-and-a-half mile circuit.

Begin at the trailhead by the stables originally designed for coffee baron James A Folger, a highly decorative equestrian building still in use today. Our circuit of the park takes a counter-clockwise route, beginning with woodland switchbacks up Bear Gulch Trail before breaking out onto the meadowlands located at the highest parts of the park, offering views over the San Francisco Peninsula.

Be sure to check out the Redwood Grove on the return part of the loop, where you'll find a tranquil gulch sheltered by tall evergreens and carpeted with pine needles. Also on the return journey look out for a huge, lone old-growth redwood which for reasons unknown was singled out by loggers for preservation. Wunderlich County Park is free, and you'll find it just off interstate 280 by the charming city of Woodside.
