A narrow coastal hiking trail winds up a steep, grassy cliffside toward a rocky peak, with the ocean stretching out in the background. A few hikers walk along the path, overlooking waves crashing against the rugged shoreline below. The sky is mostly clear with a few clouds near the horizon.

Dense coastal forest gives way to dramatic Pacific views along the trail to two distinct viewpoints that showcase Lincoln City's rugged shoreline. Though the official destination is signposted as “The Knoll,” which provides moderate views of the coastline from above the city, the real draw is “The Thumb” (also known as “God’s Thumb”), a striking rocky promontory that extends out from the coastline, offering spectacular views of secluded coves, offshore stacks, and distant beaches.

We recommend the clockwise loop trail, which begins at the end of Devil's Lake Boulevard and winds upward through shaded, jungle-like forest. Continue north on a partially sheltered spur trail to reach The Thumb, where you'll need to scale the peak along a narrow ridgeline shared with two-way foot traffic. Some visitors choose to forego the final push to the top of The Thumb and instead enjoy the expansive ocean views from a grassy meadow viewpoint.

The Knoll route lacks many of the views that a hike to The Thumb offers. The Knoll can be visited via a short spur trail off the main loop and presents southerly views of Lincoln City's coastline, along with some glimpses of the northern shoreline. A return trip from The Knoll to the loop trail may be preferable for most, as continuing on this spur leads to a moderately steep, informal section of trail.

A shorter out-and-back route to The Thumb is also possible, provided there's adequate parking at one of the two alternate parking areas. If using one of these areas as a trailhead, please park in designated spots and avoid inconveniencing or disturbing nearby residents.

Free parking for the main trailhead at the end of Devil's Lake Boulevard is located roadside, on the east side of the road. When the area is busy, you may need to park some distance from the trailhead.

Two people walk along a narrow path through a dense, sunlit forest filled with tall trees, ferns, and lush greenery. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting dappled light on the trail and creating a peaceful, natural atmosphere.

A garter snake lies coiled on the forest floor among dry leaves, twigs, and grass. Its black body features yellow stripes and small orange spots, blending into the natural surroundings.
