There are a number of good commercial options if you're looking for topographical maps of California, but before parting with your Ben Franklins, be sure to take a look at what your tax dollars have already bought you. Head over to the state website, and you can download topo maps for the entire state of California.

We've been using the 7.5 minutes series (Albers Nad27 untrimmed) myself, and your editor has 'hardly ever' gotten lost since. Ahem.
